BitTorrent Pro Overview
BitTorrent is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing communication protocol. It is a method of distributing large amounts of data without the original distributor taking on the full cost of hardware, hosting, and bandwidth resources. The protocol was designed in April 2001, first implemented and released on July 2, 2001 by programmer Bram Cohen, and is now maintained by BitTorrent, Inc. It identifies content by URL and is designed to integrate seamlessly with the web.
The advantage over plain HTTP is that when multiple downloads of the same file occur simultaneously, downloaders upload to each other, allowing the file source to support a very large number of downloaders with only a modest increase in load.
Offering large files creates scaling issues, flashy crowds, and reliability. The key to low-cost file distribution is to take advantage of your customers’ unused upload capacity.
